With the northeast monsoon expanding its reach, several districts of the State have received copious rain.
During the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Friday, places in the delta districts such as Vedaranyam and Nagapattinam received 15 cm and 14 cm rainfall, respectively — the highest in the State. Many other places recorded moderate to heavy showers.
“A trough of low at mean sea level prevails from Comorin area to Lakshadweep area. Another cyclonic circulation persists over south Tamil Nadu and adjoining Comorin area,” an official of the Meteorological Department said.
These two weather systems would bring fairly widespread rain over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the weekend. Nearly 75% of the weather stations in the State are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall till Sunday. One or two places in Tamil Nadu may get heavy rain. In places like Chennai, there could be more late-night showers, officials said.
On Friday, Karaikal and Nagapattinam were among the weather stations that received nearly 6 cm and 4 cm, respectively, till 5.30 p.m. Chennai, however, did not experience much rainfall. The Meteorological Department forecasts a generally cloudy sky with chances of light to moderate rain or thundershowers in some areas of the city till Sunday.
Overall, the State has received 17 cm rainfall since October 1 — 12% less than the seasonal average of 19 cm. Districts like Perambalur, Karur, Tiruchi and Dharmapuri have witnessed a rainfall deficit of over 50% thus far this season.
