An eight-year-old boy is fighting to survive hospital after a seemingly innocuous accident at school resulted in a life-threatening 'superbug' infection.

Jonpaul Stephenson was playing with his friends at school on Thursday when he caught his leg in a door.

It was only when he complained of a sore leg later in the day that the boy's mother rushed him to Darwin Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a superbug infection.

One of his lungs has collapsed, while his leg swelled to such a large size that surgeons had to cut it to relieve the instense pressure.

Jonpaul's heart has become enlarged as it strains to fight the super bug and he has been put on dialysis to support his kidneys.

A Go Fund Me page has been created to raise money for the eight-year-old as he fights for his life in intensive care.

Family friend Anna Joy Samidurai said Jonpaul will be flown to a hospital in Adelaide for specialist care if his condition improves.

'Jonpaul's recovery will be long and slow,' she posted on Go Fund Me.

While doctors first thought he may have fractured a bone, an X-ray later revealed the boy had been infected with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

MRSA is a type of bacteria that's commonly found on skin and in the nose that can cause infection and serious illness but is also resistant to many antibiotics.
