MYSURU: A mother and her two newborn babies (twins) died at the Chamarajanagar district hospital on Saturday morning. The doctors suspect thyroid problem as the reason. As the family members declined permission for the postmortem, the doctors were not able to find out the exact reason.

According to the district hospital sources, Ranjitha (19), wife of Hemanth, a resident of Bhagirathanagar of the city, died while she was taken to the operation theatre for a cesarean. A baby died at the time of delivery while another baby died after 12 hours.

According to the hospital sources, around 6.30am, Ranjitha was brought to the hospital with the complaint of cough. "She was rushed to the operation theatre immediately for the C-section. But she collapsed after severe cough. The doctors' team, which was attending her, decided to carry the C-section to rescue the fetus. But by the time she started delivery, one baby died at the time of delivery itself while another was normal. But in the evening around 6.30pm, second baby also died," said the hospital sources.

Both the babies were female babies.

Speaking to STOI, Dr. Raghuram Sarvegar, district surgeon, said that Ranjitha was regular for checkups. "On Friday itself she had visited the hospital for the regular check up. But on Saturday morning she was brought to the hospital following the complaints of severe cough," he said.

"There may be pressure on her heart due to the thyroid problem," he said.

According to the sources in the hospital, the doctors' fraternity requested the family members to allow for a postmortem to document the incident which may help other patients in future. But the family declined the permission. As they were under grief, doctors didn't pressure.

According to the sources, Ranjitha had not completed 9-month pregnancy. "She was 34-week pregnant," sources said.
