Fever-related deaths seem to continue unabated with five more persons, including a 4-year-old girl who tested positive for swine flu, losing their lives in Coimbatore and Salem districts within a 24-hour period.

In the second case, dengue claimed the life of Nagaraj (62) of Vellalore in Coimbatore, on Friday. He was under treatment at the CMCH. Two others, identified as Nagamani (45) and Nagaraj (55), a resident of Udumalpet in Tirupur district, succumbed at the hospital on Thursday night.
At the Salem GH, Rohith (4), who was being treated for fever, died on Friday morning. His two elder siblings (aged 8 and 12 respectively) have also been hospitalised with fever.
K Poongodi, Deputy Director of Public Health Services, Salem District, said the boy suffered from diphtheria. “We have sent his blood samples for testing to know the exact reason for his death,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Salem Corporation has levied a hefty penalty on several private establishments for turning their premises into mosquito breeding grounds. “Notices were issued to 3,870 establishments and Rs 4.85 lakh was collected as fine from them,” said R Sathish, Corporation Commissioner.
Seven-year-old boy dies of encephalopathy in ICH
A 7-year-old boy died due to encephalopathy at the Institute of Child Health and Children Hospital (ICH) in Egmore here on Thursday night. Stating that they cannot attribute the death to dengue, ICH director Dr A T Arasar said: “Dengue lasts only for a period of five to seven days. However, Saravanan had been suffering for 14 days. He was treated outside for typhoid and suffered liver damage, which is not common in dengue cases.”
“As he did not get adequate after treatment, Saravanan was brought to the ICH on Tuesday night. However, he succumbed at 8.30 pm on Thursday,” he said, adding that encephalopathy and multiple organ damage could have led to the boy’s death.
According to sources, Sansya (4) fell sick on October 28 and was admitted in the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), where she was diagnosed with swine flu. The girl was treated in isolation at a special ward. However, she died on Thursday night without responding to treatment.
