Unique Mercedes SLR 722S Roadster McLaren Edition Goes For $1 Million

A rare Mercedes-Benz SLR 722 S Roadster McLaren Edition is looking for a new home – and is unlike any other ever produced.

Mercedes-Benz and McLaren collaborated on the SLR in the early 2000s, and in 2006 unveiled the more-powerful 722 Edition, available in both Coupe and Roadster guise.

While production of the SLR ceased in 2009, McLaren wasn’t done with the vehicle and decided in 2011 to launch the exclusive SLR McLaren Edition, limited to just 25 units globally, just six of which were Roadsters.

The SLR 722 S Roadster McLaren Edition in question is arguably the most eye-catching of those six. For starters, it is adorned in a custom two-tone McLaren Orange paint scheme which incorporates a number of gloss black elements.

Elsewhere, the McLaren Edition incorporates a new bodykit aimed at increasing downforce. There’s also an upgraded suspension system and a host of lightweight elements which reduce weight by a considerable 50 kg (110 lbs). As if that wasn’t enough, this specific SLR McLaren Edition includes upgraded engine management software, beefed-up intercoolers and a McLaren sports exhaust. As a result, the car’s 5.4-liter supercharged V8 no longer delivers 641 hp like other 722 models, but 741.

This SLR McLaren Edition also happens to be the only one built by MSO to U.S.-specification, with the remaining five residing in Europe.

Given the car’s exclusively and its host of unique features, it’s no surprise that it is expensive; the asking price on MotorGT at the time of writing was sitting at a pretty $1.05 million. Is it worth it? If you love the SLR, it probably is.
