The lodge is a 350-room beachfront hotel located within Alabama’s Gulf State Park. Some of its sustainability measures include the use of recycled building materials (15 per cent) and recycling of the construction waste (70-75 per cent).
The rainwater is also collected and then redirected to a restored wetland on site instead of the storm sewers. HVAC system condensation is recycled to be used as water in the pool. The TrueGrid technology allows the rainwater in the hotel’s parking lot to drain into the ground.
The Lodge at the Gulf State Park, a Hilton hotel uses warmer lighting so as not to disturb wildlife. Floor to ceiling glass windows in the main lobby is a bird-friendly safety measure.
The whole hotel is equipped with energy efficient lighting and motion sensors to reduce electricity waste. For example, the sensors of air conditioning units trigger a shut off if the doors are left open for long.
The hotel has planted native species, to restore the coastal landscape, around the hotel area. The area is free from chemical pesticides or fertilizers or the effects of irrigation. The hotel said that they have created habitats for native birds, nesting sea turtles, and the Alabama Beach Mouse.
The native landscape was created by Sasaki Associates. The rebuilding of the hotel was led by LakeFlato and Rabun Architects.
The buildings are designed to take advantage of the gulf breezes for maximum natural ventilation and natural lighting of the interior.
The building is set back by about 200 to 225 feet from the Gulf to allow for greater dune restoration and natural dune movement.
The Lodge at Gulf State Park is the first full-service hotel to open in the area in about 20 years.
Vera Manoukian, senior vice president, and global head, Hilton Hotels & Resorts was proud to welcome responsibly designed hotel in their portfolio. Its location and offerings will give the hotel an added advantage.
