Andhra Govt gives green signal for upgrading Ongole PG Centre

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh state government gives green signal for upgrading Ongole PG Centre to ‘Andhra Kesari Tanguturi Prakasam University’ at Ongole in Prakasam district.


Releasing a Government Order in this regard, state Human Resource Development minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, said that Prakasam was the only district in the state with no university and this move is a welcome sign for the people there.


The university, will be set up over 114 acres of land allotted for the Ongole PG Centre. It is currently running with 10 post graduate courses and has 137 private un-aided colleges affiliated to it. Around 48 staff are working in the PG Centre and withe the upgradation, the number is likely to increase.


The GO given is under the Andhra Universities Act 1991 and the bill will be passed in the coming Assembly sessions, said the minister. The university will be formally launched by AP Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu at Jnanabharathi student interaction meet soon.


Ganta Srinivasa Rao said that the government had kept its promise to set up the university and is a realisation of the aspirations of the people of Prakasam district. The university is named after freedom fighter Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, the first chief minister of Andhra Pradesh state.
