Assembly Election

Three former BJP members find place.

A day after filing of nominations for the 230-seat Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections began, the Congress on Saturday released its first list of 155 candidates.

Prominent names include Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Ajay Singh, former Union Minister Suresh Pachouri, Raghogarh MLA and son of Digvijaya Singh, Jaiwardhan Singh, State working president Jitu Patwari and Adivasi leader Hira Alawat.

Former MP Laxman Singh, younger brother of Digvijaya Singh, too finds a place on the list.

Three BJP members who switched to the Congress — Sanjay Sharma, Padma Shukla and Abhay Misra — have also been accommodated.

Though Congress’ first list was expected on Thursday, a reported spat between senior leaders Digvijaya Singh and Jyotiraditya Scindia delayed the process.

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had to set up a committee of senior leaders including Ahmed Patel, Ashok Gehlot and Veerappa Moily to select candidates. Mr. Singh though had denied these reports on Twitter.
