A Huddersfield car dealer who sells million-pound vehicles is considering quitting the town blaming aggressive parking officers who he says are targeting his showroom.

Shak Shah, 37, from Huddersfield says he has lost sales worth hundreds of thousands of pounds due to the increased presence of Kirklees Council wardens.

He says they have ticketed customers and even prestige cars being moved in and out of his showroom, Shak's Specialist Cars.

Mr Shah described parking around his showroom as atrocious and said he is considering moving location because he has o pay £100,000 in rates to the local council

But the council has roundly rejected Mr Shah's accusations. It says just 13 parking tickets have been issued in that area in the last quarter - far from the 'targeting' that he is alleging.

On match days at the John Smith's Stadium when the streets are thronged with football fans' cars upwards of 50 tickets can be issued.

Mr Shah, 37, disputes the council's version of events. 'On match days there are cars parked everywhere but you never see a warden.

'Yet my customers can't leave their car for two minutes because they get a ticket.

'It's embarrassing. Parking around here is atrocious. If we let someone park on our land we have to move 20 cars to fit them in.

'We can't even park on the road outside. All we want is a bit of leeway to move cars in and out.'

Among the star cars in the showroom are Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Porsches, Rolls-Royces and a £1.7m McLaren Senna, which was recently sold.

Mr Shah added: 'My showroom is a tourist attraction for car fans. People come from all over to look at these cars. Some of them won't buy but that doesn't matter. We even let kids in.

'It doesn't matter if they can afford a ticket or not. This shouldn't be happening. I pay huge business rates - about £100,000 a year. I just want a bit of give and take.

'All I'm asking is for the wardens to come in and talk to us before they issue a ticket. A bit of co-operation.

'If it continues I'll have to think about moving out of Huddersfield. I've

been here 12 years and spent a lot of money. I've helped put Huddersfield

on the map.'

Businessman Asif Tanvir, a customer from Waterloo in Huddersfield, said he had been told by a member of staff in the parking office complaints had been coming in and that they were targeting that area.

He said: 'The council needs to work with Shak, not against him because all that will happen is that he'll move out.

'The council are really pathetic. He's leaving his cars in the road for five minutes and they are targeting that. The other day it was like a hunters' pack.'

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said: 'It is absolutely not the case that we are targeting a particular group of customers.

'Since August this year - therefore three full months - just 13 tickets have been issued in the whole of the zone around the car showroom.

'Patrols do not target anyone specifically, motorists are only ever issued a penalty charge notice when they have contravened a restriction.

'That could be non-payment, parking on a double yellow or single yellow line, or another restriction.'
