Director General of Police and Director of Fire and Rescue Services K.P. Mahendran on Friday said over 1,200 personnel would be deployed and 58 fire tender vehicles kept ready in the city to attend to emergency calls during Deepavali.

Mr. Mahendran launched an awareness campaign in his office, stressing on an accident-free Deepavali. Keeping in mind the need to burst crackers in a safe manner, the Fire and Rescue Services Department has conducted awareness programmes across the State. As part of the campaign, the Director unfurled balloons with messages. Mr. Mahendran said, “As many as 5,600 no objection certificates were issued to set up temporary firecracker shops in the State. There will be over 900 shops in the city. Fire control rooms will function round-the-clock as usual.”

Officials clarified that the time restriction introduced by the authorities would be applicable only for the bursting of noisy crackers. There will be no ban on light-emitting crackers.
