Hopes of a fine and dry weekend for Bonfire Night celebrations are up in smoke with heavy rain and strong gusts expected in North Wales.

Remnants of hurricane Oscar are set to arrive today with torrential downpours and 50mph winds expected in western parts.

The area of low pressure linked to Oscar, which was classified as a hurricane earlier this week, is expected to hit Ireland, the North West Wales coast and northern Scotland leading to blustery conditions for any early Bonfire Night celebrations.

So far three firework displays in North Wales which were due to take place over the weekend have been postponed and rescheduled due to the weather.

Holyhead will be one of the worst-hit areas in the region with gusts of up to 53mph expected this afternoon.

The Met Office has forecast a 80-90% chance of rain from noon on Saturday until 8pm with showers expected to last until midnight.

Gusts will be in the region of 45-53mph for much of the day with winds peaking between 11am and 5pm.

Forecasters say that Gwynedd will see rain from around 2pm on Saturday with a 90% risk of downpours between 4pm and 10pm. Gusts of 40mph are also expected for much of the day in Barmouth.

Over in Llandudno, the Met Office says there is a 50% chance of showers between 6pm and 10pm with winds of 40mph during the evening.

The rain will spread eastwards with Rhyl forecast rain from 10pm onwards.

Further outbreaks of showers are expected on Anglesey between 6pm and 9pm on Sunday, in Gwynedd between 3-8pm and at 6pm in Llandundo.

But there's good news for those in Wrexham and Flintshire with the forecast looking dry for the whole weekend.

Hopes for dry night on Monday November 5 have rocketed with conditions for the sparkling firework festivities expected to be near-perfect with varying cloud cover coupled with clearer spells.

There is little chance of any rain to dampen proceedings for the colourful celebration and there should be no need for extra layers to guard against any cold with temperatures above-normal for the time of year.

Temperatures will stay in double figures for many places falling slightly through the evening.

A spokesperson for The Weather Channel said; “Cloud cover will vary on Monday evening but most places will see a fair amount of clouds and periods of clearer skies are likely to be brief.”

Because of light winds, smoke from an bonfires could linger on Tuesday morning to cause a smoggy start. Fresher winds will clear any smoke but some will remain in the areas around any large bonfires and firework displays.

Calmer weather means there is a greater chance of smoke remaining in the air, which could also lead to the build-up of any mist or fog.
