A woman has been sent a strange note from disappointed trick or treaters for not taking part in the American tradition of Halloween.

Kellie Meier from the Sunshine Coast received the unexpected letter in her mailbox the day after Halloween.

'Good job you just made a sweet innocent kid like me have a horrible night just by NOT going to the shops and spending one to three dollars on a bag of lollies and opening your door to the sound of trick or treat,' the letter read.

'WELL DONE I hope you have a GREAT day knowing that you’ve made dozens of kids disappointed and miserable.'

The letter then finished off with seven sad faces.

ABC shared the image on their twitter page and received a few responses agreeing with the child or blaming the kids' parents.

'We teach our kids not to talk to strangers and not to take lollies etc from them. And really it’s up to the individual if they wish to participate in this ridiculous America ritual,' one wrote.

'That must be a trick!... any sane person would not let their kids write that kind of letter. How disrespectful. A right treat!' another wrote.

'The age of self entitlement is just getting further and further out of control!' another tweeted.

Others were disgusted at the bullying exhibited by the letter which some claim to have been written by an adult.

'Wow .. Halloween bullying!! I hope she ignores it. We all have choices. I used to ignore door knocks but now enjoy Halloween and seeing the kids costumes whilst handing out sweets!! However we all don't!! Power to you Kellie!!' one wrote.

'If a household doesn't want to participate in an adopted event then they shouldn't be shamed. This is poor form by the adult who wrote this letter,' another wrote.

'What a nasty little brat! The parents need to be ashamed of themselves, as no child is like that without a good deal of brainwashing.'
