Increase in child abuse cases

more-in

A meeting of Childline held at the Collectorate here the other day noted that 64 sexual abuse complaints had been received between April and September this year. The number of cases registered last year was 46.

Data reveals that at least 37% of the victims were girls. Most of the cases were reported from Kayamkulam, Ambalapuzha and Haripad taluks.

Accused in the majority of cases were neighbours, relatives or friends.

The meeting decided to conduct children’s week observance from November 14 to 21. Sports and entertainment programmes will be organised for children in flood-affected areas.

Further, 10 students selected from different schools in the district will be given training on disaster management. Panchayat-level painting competitions will be organised to inculcate awareness of self-defence and child rights, officials said.
