Sabarimala under police surveillance from today

Thiruvananthapuram: From Saturday evening, Sabarimala region will be under the control of a 5,000-strong contingent of police. In order to prevent the people from assembling at Nilackal, Pamba and Sannidhanam, prohibitory orders under CrPC 144 has been declared in Pamba, Nilackal, Elavunkal and Sannidhanam from Saturday midnight to November 6 midnight.
All these measures have been taken in view of the Sabarimala temple opening at 5.30pm on November 5. The temple will be opened till 10.30pm November 6 for the ‘Chithira Atta Vishesham’.

Devotees and mediapersons will be allowed entry to Pamba from Nilackal only on November 5 from 8am. Police will be strictly screening the people who are coming to Nilackal. People will be allowed to travel to Pamba only after security check, said Pathanamthitta district police chief T Narayanan.

He said that no one other than the devotees and media persons will be allowed to travel to Pamba from Nilackal. As per the orders from director general of police, the police team will be headed by two IGs P Vijayan and M R Ajith Kumar. Five SPs and 10 DSPs will be assisting them in providing the security at Vadasserikkara, Nilackal, Pampa and Sannidhanam.

Police are taking all precautionary measures in view of the call made by several Hindu organizations and Sangh Parivar to resist the entry of women into Sabarimala by parading their activists at Nilackal, Pamba and Sannidhanam.


“Nobody will be allowed to stay for long or to camp at Sannidhanam and also along the trekking path. Police are committed to implement the Supreme Court order. Hence, if any woman comes seeking police protection to trek the holy shrine, the police are bound to provide protection,” said Narayanan.


The people who are involved in several works in and around Sabarimala region have been asked to get the police clearance certificate from the respective police stations of their area. They have also been asked to carry an identity card which should be produced before the police. All the government employees have been asked to carry their identity cards to enter Pamba and Sannidhanam.


Police have so far arrested 3,701 people and registered 543 cases in connection with the violence occurred in Sabarimala.
