SURAT : A 20-year-old youth and his 16-year-old lover allegedly committed suicide by hanging in the latter’s house in Rupwati village near Gariyadhar town of Bhavnagar district on Thursday.
It is suspected that the couple - Paresh Vaghela and Tejal Rathwa - took the drastic step as their families were bitterly opposed to their relationship, both being from different castes.
Paresh Vaghela, who was working in a textile mill and Tejal Rathwa, who lived with her parents in a rented accommodation in Surat, had fallen in lover few months ago. Tejal’s parents hail from Naswadi in the tribal-dominated Chhota Udepur district.
On Wednesday, Tejal’s father Pravin had lodged a complaint against Vaghela in Kapodra police station alleging that he had kidnapped Tejal on Tuesday morning with an intention to marry her.
In Surat’s Kapodra police station Praving Rathwa, father of Tejal, 16, had lodged a kidnapping complaint against Paresh Vaghela, 20, an employee of a textile unit, on Wednesday. In his complaint Rathwa alleged that with intention to marry his minor girl the accused kidnapped her. Rathwa alleged that his daughter was allegedly kidnapped on Tuesday morning.
“After the complaint was registered, police contacted Vaghela on his phone but he lied to to them saying that he was near Navsari. Police also counselled him and tried to convince him to come back,” said a police officer at Kapodra police station.
Kapodra police were also in touch with their counterparts in Gariyadhar since Vaghela belongs to Rupawati village. “We got to know that they were found hanging in Vaghela’s house. We are yet to get exact details about the case and it seems that committed suicide early on Thursday,” said police.
Vaghela was employed in a textile unit near Tejal’s house in Gayatri Nagar locality of Kapodra and they developed friendship after a casual meeting. Tejal was not studying and her parents work with a catering firm. Vaghela was living alone in city and police are investigating about his family background.
