Residents complain that Link Road is misused as a ‘racing stretch’

Well over a year after it was opened to traffic, Link Road which connects Ramapuram with K.K. Nagar via Anna Main Road is not being put to optimum use. The road was laid at a cost of ₹ five crore. Residents say bikers looking for a makeshift racing track use this bitumen-topped stretch at night. “It has been an issue for the past several months. They take other motorists by surprise. Therefore, speed-breakers should be constructed on this road,” says K. Vinoth, a resident of K.K. Nagar.

At present, motorists from Anna Main Road take a left turn near the roundabout to access Link Road in Nesapakkam. And, motorists from Ramapuram take a right turn at Link Road to access K.K. Nagar via Anna Main Road. The roundabout with a high-mast lamp at the centre is meant to prevent accidents.

The 300-metre-long and 19-metre-wide new Link Road was laid to decongest the existing 950-metre-long Bazaar Road in Nesapakkam. It runs through densely-populated localities. According to police sources, the bikers are from areas like Virugambakkam, Valasaravakkam and Ramapuram. Further, they tend to race here as the Link Road is found in an isolated location. Moreover, police booths on Anna Main Road are located only at two spots — opposite Udayam theatre where Anna Main Road begins and at MGR Nagar junction on Anna Main Road. The police also say that a couple of cases of rash driving on the stretch have been booked. “We have increased our vigilance on the route between Ashok Pillar and Porur which are connected by many interior roads,” add police sources.
