Jagraon resident held for smuggling hooch

LUDHIANA: The Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested Shubham Sharma, a resident of Jagraon, on charges of smuggling illicit liquor to a local resident by making use of rail transport from the local railway station on Wednesday during the late night patrolling hours here.


GRP (Ludhiana) assistant sub-inspector Parkash Singh said: “A Jagraon resident was detained by a police party under my supervision on Wednesday from the city railway station platform late on Wednesday evening. The team recovered 20 bottles of illicit liquor from the accused.”


In the initial stage of investigation, police came to know about the extensive use of rail transport for smuggling of illicit liquor for the past several months. Shubham was arrested by the police party during the festival checking drive. A case under Excise Act was registered against the accused.
