AHMEDABAD: The cyber cell of city police on Friday arrested a 18-year FY B Com student, Preksha Shah, for maligning the image of her childhood friend — also a girl and a college mate on a social media platform by creating a fake profile. Shah, who stays in the neighbourhood as the victim, also put the victim’s old cellphone number with the comment – ‘contact for sex.’
“The complainant started getting calls on the number and went into depression. The complainant who is also a 18 year old girl, then contacted us,” said inspector V B Barad of cyber cell.

Investigators said they approached service providers of the social media platform and got the IP address of the device from which the fake profile was made. “The IP address belonged to Shah. She has confessed and said that she was agitated as the victim used to taunt her without reason,” said an investigator.

Barad said Shah had created the fake profile in August to malign her former friend.

DCP, cyber cell, Rajdeepsinh Jhala said Shah nursed a grudge as according to her, the complainant slighted her by saying that she had made a mistake by making friends with Shah.

This is the first detection since cyber cell was given a police station status on October 31. “Earlier it used to function under the city crime branch and used its station dairy to register offences. We have registered three offences out of which two have been detected. We have also zeroed in on a man who used to malign a woman on a social messaging site,” said a cyber cell official.
