Curtains came down on campaigning for the November 3 byelections to Mandya Lok Sabha and Ramanagaram Assembly constituencies on Thursday after some hectic political activities in both the constituencies over the last few weeks.

The last day was noisy with candidates and their supporters intensifying electioneering to woo the voters.

The major attraction in Mandya district was Janata Dal (Secular) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda. The former Prime Minister, after much speculation about his electioneering in the district, addressed a huge crowd at Nagamangala and sought votes for his party candidate L.R. Shivarame Gowda.

In the wake of resentment growing against the JD(S) candidate among the Congress cadre, who have been opposing the pre-poll alliance between both the parties, Mr. Gowda said that he himself has forgotten everything and had visited Congress leader Siddaramaiah’s residence recently. Time has arrived to forget the past incidents and pain, he said.

The byelections are like acid test for the coalition parties to keep communal elements away from power. Mr. Siddaramaiah has extended his fullest support for the coalition candidates in the ongoing byelections at five constituencies in the State, he said.

Meanwhile, the BJP wrapped up electioneering with a motorcycle rally.

Former Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok conducted a road show at different areas in the town and requested the voters to elect the BJP candidate, Siddaramaiah, in the elections.

Campaigning was dull in Ramanagaram with L. Chandrashekar, the BJP nominee, announcing his retirement from the fray and supporting JD(S) candidate Anitha Kumaraswamy.
