Morgan Working On A More Modern Sports Car

Morgan is in the midst of developing its most modern and advanced sports car yet, Autocar reports.

Morgan’s new model will have a design drastically different than any other Morgan to come before it. It will feature a high and round cabin, a long hood, prominent front and rear wheel arches, and a rear decklid somewhat reminiscent of the original Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

Underpinning the vehicle will be a newly-developed platform that retains the same front-engine, rear-drive layout which Morgan has relied on for decades. Both coupe and roadster variants will be offered to customers with each having two seats.

Morgan has been developing this chassis for quite some time and confirmed that it will be made from aluminum. It will premiere in a new vehicle set to arrive next year to celebrate Morgan’s 110th anniversary. The British marque says it is similar in size and weight to the structure used by the Aero but is twice as stiff.

A selection of powertrains will be offered with the new Morgan. Many details remain unconfirmed but it’s claimed that initial models will utilize a six-cylinder engine with forced induction and pumping out in excess of 350 hp. Both a manual six-speed and paddle-shift automatic transmission will be available. Once production of the vehicles ramp up, other engines will be introduced to the range, including a number of electrified variants.

Performance will obviously vary depending on the powertrain but the range-topping car should reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in the mid-4 second range while exceeding 150 mph (241 km/h).

The new Morgan is tipped to launch in the mid-2020, so don’t place an order just yet.
