This is the shocking moment a brazen thief breaks into a family's backyard and scoops up their beloved pet dog Chewy, before fleeing on foot. 

Footage of the incident was captured on the family's CCTV in Sydney's west on Monday morning and obtained by Nine News. 

The vision shows the hooded man jumping over the family's fence in St Clair and walking into the covered area of the yard, before chasing after the petrified animal.

The man, who was wearing a purple hooded jumper, baits the dog with cat food and then snatches the family pet.

He is seen struggling to hold onto it as the dog tosses and turns in an attempt to escape the man's grasp.

The man disappears off camera before re-emerging, where he is captured throwing the dog over the fence as he jumps to flee the property.

The owner is now appealing to anyone who may have seen their beloved two-and-a-half year old Pomeranian/Maltese named Chewy to contact police. 

'I know he's terrified wherever he is because he's never happy unless I'm around, he's my baby,' emotional owner Kelly Foster told Nine News.

'I'm just hoping that whoever's got him is looking after him and that he's safe'

When asked by Daily Mail Australia if the dog was known throughout the neighbourhood, Ms Foster said: 'We don't really take him out of the yard much because he's happy to just run and chase his ball'.  

'But the neighbours in my street really love him and this grub jumped the fence,' she said. 

She says the dog is desexed, microchipped and weighs about 8kgs.

The family has handed the CCTV footage to police, who are currently investigating.
