Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is likely to save 80 MLD (million litre per day) of water between November 5 and 25.

A large number of people are expected to go out of the city during Diwali holidays which reduces the water consumption. This is also the time when the civic body carries out annual maintenance of its water treatment plants.

SMC’s hydraulic department officials said that current water supply of 1,250 MLD was likely to come down to 1,150 MLD after November 5. This will enable SMC to save about 1,600 MLD over 20 day period of holidays, said HD Khatwani, additional city engineer, SMC. Khatwani added that in winter months (November to mid-February), water off take goes down by 10 MLD.

During the Diwali holidays the hydraulic department will take up disinfection work of its all water tanks and electrical and mechanical maintenance work.
