A Delhi court on Friday granted bail to former Bahujan Samaj Party MP’s son Ashish Pandey who was arrested for brandishing his .357 bore Israel-made pistol outside Hyatt Regency hotel last month. Metropolitan Magistrate Dharmender Singh granted the relief to Pandey on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety of the same amount.
Pandey was booked under the Arms Act and for assault after a video of him threatening a couple was captured on a phone camera by one of the companions of the accused on October 14. A video of the incident had gone viral, prompting MoS Kiren Rijiju to take note.
On Thursday, the Delhi Police had filed a chargesheet against the accused. According to an officer, Ashish, who was accompanied by three women, claimed he had asked the man to step out of the women’s washroom before the argument. This, Ashish claimed, prompted the man to threaten him.
The man, however, had earlier told police that he was holding the door to the washroom open as his woman friend was puking inside. He had claimed Ashish’s friends abused them and the argument escalated at the porch.
Ashish’s questioning report mentioned that he had reached Delhi on October 12 with his driver, and was carrying his pistol as he has an all-India arms licence.
The investigation officer also recorded the statement of 25 persons, including hotel employees and the duo threatened by Ashish. Sources had earlier said that police sent an email to the three London-based women, asking them for their statement. “Police got their email IDs from the hotel where they were staying… Their statement will be submitted in the supplementary chargesheet,” police sources had said.
