The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday dismissed the plea of suspended Corporation Engineer A. Mathuram, who sought a direction for quashing his suspension order.

Justice S. Vaidyanathan said that the petition was devoid of merit and therefore failed. The court observed that it was advisable that government officials holding sensitive posts shall be periodically transferred at least once a year so that they do not have any vested interest.

It further observed that though the petitioner was suspended on certain charges, instead of keeping such persons under suspension, the suspension could be reviewed and the person transferred and posted in a non-sensitive place.

Earlier, Mr. Mathuram had moved the court against his transfer order. However, in a subsequent development, the State told the court that the former Madurai Corporation Engineer had been placed under suspension and his transfer order withdrawn.

Mr. Mathuram was involved in various irregularities, the State had submitted. Some of the charges included missing corporation documents related to engineering works and favouring for promotion tainted engineers.
