Vadodara: Integral Coach Factory (ICF) – the rail manufacturing unit of the Indian Railways – has received the nod to draw out plans to manufacture metro coaches from Chennai.

“Just two days back, we have been given a green signal from railway minister and chairman, railway board to start the plan to manufacture metro coaches starting with the east-west line for Kolkata Metro,” Sudhanshu Mani, general manager of ICF, told TOI.

“We will talk to Kolkata Metro and the signalling supplier. Like Train 18, we would like to do it at 60 to 65% cost at which metro coaches are presently purchased. If we succeed with Kolkata Metro, we can cater to other metros,” he said, adding that ICF may deliver the metro coaches to Kolkata Metro by end of the next financial year.

Currently, coaches for metro projects which are imported or manufactured by multi-nationals in the country cost very high. “We have the capability to make it in India at 60 % less price,” he said.
