Nagpur: Moddi Gawde (40), police warden (patil) of Naranur village at Etapalli taluka in Gadchiroli, was shot dead by cadres of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) shortly after midnight of Tuesday.
He was dragged out of his residence by around 15-20 Maoists.

Police said the rebels left the place after pumping a bullet from close quarters in the Gawde’s chest. Maoists also left behind a pamphlet claiming that Gawde was a police informer.

The Kasansoor Area Committee of the banned outfit has claimed responsibility for the murder. The local outfit is led by Mahesh Gota, who has been booked in the case.

Police said Gawde had four children. Apart from volunteering for police department, Gawde earned his livelihood as a farmer.

SDPO of Etapalli division Kirankumar Suryavanshi said Gawde was not an informer. “There was a monetary dispute between Gawde and the Maoists since demonetisation. Gawde was assaulted by Maoists in the past too. It is an old tradition of Maoists to justify their killing of tribals by labelling them as police informers,” he said.
