As many as 4.98 crore salaried taxpayers filed their returns in Assessment Year 2017-18, according to the Income Tax Department’s tax data released recently. This is marginally higher than the 4.94 crore returns in AY 2016-17.

Salaried professionals contributed a total of ₹15.94 lakh crore in AY 2017-18 -- about 14% higher than the previous year.
