Mumbai: A 24-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly attacking his former girlfriend and her current boyfriend in Mankhurd on Monday afternoon.
According to the Mankhurd police, the accused identified as Chandrakant Salunke, a native of Raigad, stays in Pune. Mr. Salunkhe and Sonali Dalvi were in a relationship when she was studying in Pune.
“Ms. Dalvi and her current boyfriend, Akash Kamble, were exiting Antarang Diagnostic Centre in Mankhurd, where they both work, when Mr. Salunkhe approached them. He tried to get Ms. Dalvi to listen to him, but as he had been persistently harassing her for the last couple of weeks, she was in no mood to talk to him. As she turned to leave, Mr. Salunkhe stabbed her with a knife. When Mr. Kamble tried to intervene, Mr. Salunkhe stabbed him as well, after which he ran the knife over his own throat,” an officer with the Mankhurd police said.
All the three collapsed to the ground, bleeding, and people rushed them to a private hospital. The Mankhurd police were subsequently informed and a team was sent to the hospital.
“Our inquiries have indicated that Mr. Salunkhe and Ms. Dalvi used to be in a relationship till 2014, after which Ms. Dalvi shifted to Mumbai for work and they started drifting apart. Ms. Dalvi eventually severed ties with him, while he kept trying to convince her to give their relationship another chance. Recently, when Mr. Salunkhe learned that she was seeing Mr. Kamble, he came to Mumbai to confront Ms. Dalvi,” the officer said.
Senior police inspector Nitin Bobade, Mankhurd police station, confirmed that the failed relationship was the motive behind the attack. “Ms. Dalvi and Mr. Kamble were discharged on Wednesday. Mr. Salunkhe, too, were discharged on Wednesday and was subsequently arrested,” Mr. Bobade said.
Mr. Salunkhe, an IT professional, has been charged with attempt to murder and assault with weapons under the Indian Penal Code and various sections of the Arms Act. After being produced in court on Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Salunkhe was remanded in judicial custody.
