MOHALI: A 35-year-old shopkeeper allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house in Derabassi on Wednesday.

Jaswinder Singh was upset with his wife after she refused to fast on Karwa Chauth on Saturday, police said.

Police said the mother-inlaw of the victim had come to their house a few days before Karwa Chauth and told them to celebrate the festival and perform the rituals with relatives at their home in Dera Jagardi village. She also took her daughter along with her. On Karwa Chauth, family members and relatives of the victim went to his in-law’s house. However, his wife did not hold a fast. Both families had an argument over the issue. On Wednesday at 9 am, Jaswinder locked himself in his room and allegedly hanged himself. Police booked the victim’s wife Ramandeep Kaur, his mother-in-law Manjeet Kaur, his sister-in-law Rupinder Kaur and his brother-inlaw Romi under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC.
