Newsfan has summer black-type option
Kim Waugh knows there are plenty of options for Newsfan as she returns to racing at Rosehill on Saturday.
There is not just her summer campaign to consider for Waugh, but perhaps a return to the Provincial Championship, the final of which Newsfan was runner-up in earlier in the year.
With two wins in six starts, and four seconds, Newsfan would still be eligible for the rich Provincial Championship series, even with a couple of wins this preparation, as long as there is no stakes win among them.
That could be the dilemma.
“We are looking at Saturday as a starting point and trying to work which way we will go,” Waugh said. “She has been working well and won a Wyong barrier trial and there is a couple of ways we could go and Saturday will tell us a lot.
“We have always thought she was up to black-type racing and we could look at a race like the Villiers, which gets you into a Doncaster, the other option is to protect her and wait to go back to the Provincial Championship.
“She will tell us where we should go.”
Newsfan has been given time to mature. She probably should have been closer to Serene Miss in the Provincial Championship final in the autumn when she didn’t get clear until the final 100 metres.
“It was a big run and we were going to the Godolphin Crown at Hawkesbury after it but she strained a ligament behind her knee,” Waugh said. “We just took care of her and gave her a good break.
“She’s fine now. We are looking for a good summer prep and maybe have a shot at black type with her because she is up to it.
“That’s the difficult thing with her, whether to take on the black type or wait for the Provincial Championship. But as we found out last year, putting your eggs in one basket, it can go wrong.
“We worked Uptown Lad through his grades at this time last year, qualified him for the final but he got injured and didn’t run. We also had Manhattan Mist in the final and he got cast in his box the morning of the race had to be scratched.
"She ran in the final and had no luck, so maybe it just wasn't meant to be.
“We know we have a nice mare in Newsfan, we just have work out what is the best way to go with her. If she comes back and is flying we might give her a chance at the next level because it will make her more valuable.”
Waugh also takes Manhattan Mist to Rosehill on Saturday as he builds toward the Spring Provincial Series Final at Kembla on December 1. He qualified for the final by winning the Wyong heat a couple of weeks ago, which was his fifth win in 10 starts.
“He is a very honest horse that has a good record and we have got him in that $150,000 final,” Waugh said. “He needs to have another run before the final and this race fits in perfectly.
“He is going really well and he should go close again.
"We are taking two of our better horses to Rosehill and hoping for a good day.”
