Phone snatched from pedestrian in Sector 22

CHANDIGARH: An Activaborne miscreant snatched a mobile phone from a pedestrian in Sector 22 on Tuesday night. On his statement, the Sector 17 police have registered a case against unknown person and started investigations in this regard. No arrest has been made in this case so far.

With this snatching, the UT police have registered a total 168 snatching cases till date. However, the police claimed to have solved 110 snatchings out of these cases.

The cops further said that Malkit Kumar (22), a resident of Sector 22 here, had reported that he was going on foot to his house and his mobile phone was in his hand. As he reached near house no. 1445 in Sector 22, a person came from his back side on a black Activa scooter and fled after snatching his mobile phone.

The complainant further stated that the accused was wearing a helmet and he failed to note down the registration number of his scooter.

With the help of some passersby, Malkit managed to inform the cops about the snatching and on this information the police from Sector 17 police station reached the spot and cordoned off the area to nab the accused. However, still the accused managed to flee from the area.


The police have collected CCTV footage of the houses near the crime spot and are scrutinizing these. Meanwhile, the Sector 17 police have booked an unidentified person under Section 356 (assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft of property carried by a person) and 379 (punishment for theft) of the IPC.


The cops said the complainant hailed from Fatehabad in Haryana and he was in the city for some training programme at the Kendriya Sadan, Sector 9.


However, the police claimed that in comparison to last year, there has been a dip in snatchings from July 1 to September 30.


Data reveals that last year in the same period the city had witnessed 68 cases of snatchings, of which 48 cases had been solved. However, this year the city has recorded 46 snatchings, of which 25 have been solved.
