Ola, Uber strike: union to negotiate again today

Mumbai: The strike by drivers of Ola and Uber demanding better fares entered 10th day on Wednesday. After two meetings which ended in a stalemate, the union representing the protesters will be meeting representatives of the two companies on Thursday.

Union officials said the strike is most likely to be called off on Thursday as the drivers are getting more restless with each passing day. The strike was called by the Maharashtra Rajya Rashtriya Kamgar Sangh (MRRKS).

The union met company officials on Tuesday and negotiations went on till the early hours of Wednesday. “The negotiations continued till 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday. The representatives of both companies have sought more time to check with their management and we will meet again on Thursday,” Govind Mohite, general secretary, MRRKS, said.

According to union officials, the negotiations were stalled at the demand for providing a waiting charge for every minute and hence compensating drivers for the entire run time. “At present there is no way to know whether this aspect is factored in the price and what the charge is. They are all clubbed together and sometimes we end up spending hours for fares as low as 300,” a driver said.

Drivers, meanwhile, said with Deepavali around the corner they need to get back on the road and don’t see how the strike can sustain any longer. “For the past 10 days, we have not been able to earn a single rupee. We hope there is a resolution on Thursday,” a driver said.

A section of drivers on Wednesday also met Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, seeking his intervention. On the other hand, hundreds of striking drivers are moving to Meru cabs as an alternative.
