The tough new laws that could see you banned from driving on the spot for breaking one simple rule

  • Tough driving laws have come into effect which penalise motorists for speeding
  • Drivers who are caught travelling at high speeds will have licence suspended
  • Maximum penalty for driving while disqualified is now $38,000 or two years jail

Tough driving laws have come into effect which will penalise motorists for speeding by immediately suspending their licence for months.

Drivers who are caught travelling at between 25km/h and 35km/h more than the speed limit in Victoria will have their licence taken away for three months.

The same offence had previously resulted in a one-month ban, the Herald Sun reported.

The same three-month suspension also applies to Victorian drivers who break 110km/h speed limits by between 20 and 25km/h.

Vic Roads director of road access Roger Chao said suspensions were effective in curbing speeding.

'There was strong evidence that licence suspension for higher-level speeding offences lower the likelihood of repeat offences and these drivers being involved in a casualty crash.'

The maximum penalty for driving while disqualified is now $38,000 or two years in jail.

Head of road policing operations in Victoria Super Intendent John Fitzpatrick said people who speed are 'making deliberate choices to place themselves and others' lives at risk'.

'It's not rocket science - everyone knows that speed kills, so please don't do it.'
