Transtan in Guinness Book

The Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (Transtan) has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for organising the largest organ donation awareness programme.

At an event organised by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, doctors explained the significance of organ donation and created awareness among 3,000 school and college students on the noble cause.

According to official sources, the awareness programme organised here on October 24, was an initiative of Health Minister C Vijaya Bhaskar and officials from the Guinness Book of World Records were present at the event.

A formal announcement confirming the achievement was made on Wednesday, the sources said.

Tamil Nadu, which has been on top of other States in cadaver transplantation programme for three consecutive years now, started the mission in 2008. It became the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) in 2014. Since inception, Transtan has 459 heart, 339 lung, 1,103 liver and 2,147 kidney transplantations to its credit.
