THANE: The anti-extortion cell (AEC) on Thursday arrested the husband of a corporator from Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation and a railway fabrication contractor for illegal sale of firearms. The fabrication contractor, Rakesh Salunke (30), has also been booked for allegedly duping around 50 railway job aspirants of lakhs.

Constable Prashant Bhurke received a tip-off about an illegal sale of firearms near Upvan lake and the police caught Salunke with two pistols, one revolver and 18 cartridges, said DCP (crime) Deepak Deoraj. Salunke told his interrogators that he had procured the firearms from Nitin Pagare (33), the husband of BSP corporator Soni Pagare.

While searching Salunke's house, the police found fake letterheads of Central Railway and rubber stamps, said senior inspector (AEC) Pradeep Sharma. Salunke would cheat job aspirants to repay loans, but when they demanded their money back, he bought the firearms from Pagare to threaten them, said inspector Vikas Ghodke.

Preliminary probe revealed that Salunke had allegedly taken Rs 2 lakh each from around 50 railway job-seekers, said inspector Rajkumar Kothmire.
