Forty lakh diesel and petrol vehicles, which were more than 10 and 15 years old respectively, have been de-registered in the national capital, the Delhi government told the Supreme Court Thursday.
A bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur had, on the last date of hearing, raised questions on the implementation of its May 2015 order, dismissing an appeal challenging the April 7, 2015 NGT order regarding banning of 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles plying in Delhi-NCR.
“Three-and-a-half-years have gone by, but it appears that orders passed by the NGT and confirmed by this court are not being complied with. The counsel for Delhi government has been asked to advise his client to act with promptitude,” the bench had said.
Appearing for the Centre Thursday, Additional Solicitor General A N S Nadkarni told the bench that the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had complied with the apex court direction to create social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook, where citizens can lodge complaints regarding pollution in Delhi-NCR. He added that 18 complaints had been received on these accounts till Wednesday, and CPCB has also given a link on its website to the list of 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR.
The ASG further said that the CPCB had a ‘Sameer’ app for tackling pollution-related complaints. Advocate Aparajita Singh, assisting the court as an amicus curiae in the matter, however, said the app was good for finding out AQI, but if somebody tries to lodge a complaint, the app crashes.
