Unless you’re an absolute novice at towing things, you should know that safety chains are a necessity if a trailer comes unhitched from a vehicle. The owner of this VW Tiguan clearly never got that memo.
The following dashcam footage comes from the German autobahn and shows the carnage that can be caused by a trailer slipping off and rolling into traffic.
The clip shows the Tiguan cruising down the autobahn and at first, everything appears to be fine. However, shortly after crossing into the right lane, the trailer somehow comes unhitched. It’s difficult to say exactly what happened but moments before the trailer slipped off, its wheels unexpectedly locked-up.
Unfortunately, there was a large truck following the Tiguan when the trailer became detached and despite the trucker’s best efforts, they weren’t able to swerve quick enough to avoid carnage.
After slamming into the trailer, the truck aggressively veers to the right, over a patch of grass and spears into a crash barrier.
Remarkably, the truck didn’t roll after shooting off the road and the driver was able to escape without serious injuries.
Recovering the truck wasn’t easy. Footage from the scene shows two huge cranes being used to lift the truck up from the grass and back on to the road.
