With summer on the way, parents are being warned to make sure their children aren't being left in locked cars as an increasing number of calls are made to ambulances.
On a typical Australian summer day, the temperature inside a parked car can reach as much as 30 to 40 degrees hotter than outside.
Each year emergency services rescue more than 2,000 unattended children in cars, but with the rise of self-locking doors, experts warn this figure could increase.

75 per cent of the temperature increase occurs within five minutes of closing the car
In some instances, distressed parents have been trapped outside their vehicles after the car doors have locked without warning as they left the keys inside.
On a 30C day the temperature inside a car can reach up to 70C in under an hour, according to Kidsafe NSW.
The majority of the temperature increase occurs within five minutes of closing the car.
One terrifying incident in January saw a child left in a hot, locked car for three hours on Sydney's north shore.
Police were forced to smash in the window of the car to rescue the toddler who was found dehydrated and visibly distressed.
Richard Ligault, the boy's father, said he had a 'rough night' the night before and simply forgot about his three-year-old son.

In another dramatic case caught by Channel 9's show Paramedics, the RACV, police, ambulance officers and firefighters were called to rescue two-year-old Charlotte from a locked Jeep.
Shannon Peyton-Bell put her handbag, which contained the fob to the car, on the passenger seat before walking around to get in the driver's side door.

While making her way around, the self-locking function was triggered, the Herald Sun reported.
After she couldn't find anything to break a window, the distressed mother called emergency services, who freed Charlotte 35 minutes later.

The concerned passerby spoke to the boy for 12 minutes while waiting for his father to return from shopping, to make sure he was okay.
In September 2017, a barber rescued a young boy from a hot car after his father allegedly left him inside so he could go to the pub across the road.
Issa Khadem heard the distressed three-year-old boy while he was locked inside the car as temperatures rose to more than 35C.
Mr Khadem was unsure if he could legally smash a window and called the local Bankstown police, who broke the glass on the driver's side to free the boy and treat him for dehydration.
Police and paramedics repeatedly warn parents of the potentially deadly consequences of leaving children in cars, especially in summer.
The quick rise in temperature inside locked cars can cause damage to body cells which leads to unconsciousness, shock, organ failure and even death.
Self-locking doors are extremely common in modern cars, with many locking if keys are left inside to prevent the vehicle being stolen.
