Delta has unveiled the cabin design for its new A220 aircraft, which boasts bigger seats, state-of-the art screens and bathrooms with windows.

The airline is the first in the US to take delivery of the new Airbus model. It says it will feature an interior that brings 'the comfort of a wide-body plane to a smaller aircraft'.

The new plane will have three cabins with capacity for 109 passengers and have other 'thoughtful innovations' that include high-capacity overhead bins, extra large windows, full-spectrum LED ambient lighting and power ports for all.

Each passenger will have access to a state-of-the-art seat back screen to watch in-flight entertainment as well as a personal power port

Although several airlines do have lavatories with windows, the Delta A220 is reportedly the first US commercial aircraft to have this feature.

In the main cabin, which can take 82 passengers, each seat is 18.6 inches wide, which is certainly roomy, although there are other short-haul aircraft with wider economy seats. For example Bangkok Airways' A320s have economy seats that are 19.8in.

The Delta cabin seats each have individual seat-back screens and are laid out in a two-by-three configuration.

In the Delta Comfort Plus cabin, which has 15 seats, passengers will get extra legroom compared to the main cabin as well as dedicated overhead bin space.

While customers rich enough to be in one of the 12 first class seats will enjoy an even wider seat and be able to watch movies on the largest in-flight entertainment screen in any of Delta's top-end cabins.

The airline's first A220 is scheduled to begin service in early 2019 with the inaugural flight travelling from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Boston Logan International on January 31.

The aircraft is powered by Pratt & Whitney's latest geared turbofan PW1500G engine and it will fly domestic flights around the United States. 

Delta says that the plane will take advantage of advanced technology and composite materials designed to deliver an expected 20 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency over similar-sized aircraft.

The cabin interior of the A220 was unveiled to mark the 10th anniversary of Delta's merger with Northwest Airlines.

Gil West, Delta's senior executive vice president and chief operating officer, said: 'As we look back at our growth over the past 10 years since the Delta-Northwest merger, we reflect on the complementary strengths the two airlines brought to form a combined company that’s well positioned to continue leading the industry in decades to come.

'In many ways, the A220 represents our continued work to make flying better for everyone and represents the go-forward objectives of our fleet strategy.'

Other airlines that are already Airbus A220 customers are Swiss International Air Lines, AirBaltic and Korean Air.
