Ludhiana: After challaning car drivers for not wearing seatbelts, the Ludhiana police on Wednesday started a special drive to check whether bus drivers follow the key safety measure. Till evening, the traffic police had challaned 36 bus drivers at different checkpoints for not wearing seatbelt.

The drive started following a traffic awareness programme organised at Bharat Nagar chowk on Wednesday morning. During the drive, additional deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Sukhpal Singh Brar, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) Gurdev Singh along with a representative team from CT university distributed flowers and pamphlets to law-abiding citizens and warned and challaned violators.

As officials noticed that most of bus drivers were driving without a seatbelt, ADCP Brar issued directions to challan them.

ADCP Sukhpal Brar said, “It is a positive sign that car drivers have started wearing seat belts and they are concerned for their safety. However, not even a single bus driver was seen wearing a seatbelt. Therefore, we have started a special drive to issue challans against bus drivers for the violation. Till evening, we have challaned 36 bus drivers and this drive will continue for a couple of days.”
