Wanted criminal nabbed after encounter

BERHAMPUR: Dreaded criminal Jitendra Swain was nabbed by a special squad of police after an exchange of fire at Dengapadar Chowk on Hinjili-Sheragada Road late on Monday.Jitendra alias Jitu of Bayapalli village under Gangapur police was involved in several crimes, including murders, Ganjam SP Brijesh Roy said. A special squad comprising IICs of Sheragada, Hinjili, Khalikote and Pattapur was formed to nab him.

Around 1 am on Monday, the special squad was tipped off about the movement of Jitu in Burupada, Marudi, Gobindapur and Dengapadar areas with an associate on a motorcycle. The squad spotted him near Dengapadar Chowk and confronted him. On seeing police, Jitu opened fire at police and the latter retaliated during which a bullet hit Jitu’s right knee. His associate, however, managed to escape under the cover of darkness around 2.30 am.

Police nabbed Jitu and recovered a country-made mouser with 1 round live bullet, a mobile phone and motorcycle which had no registration number, the SP said. Jitu is accused of murdering Budha Bisoi of Aska and Jogi Swain of Gothogaon besides attempting to kill Bhika Tarai of Keshapur, Roy said.
Not only in Ganjam, Jitu’s crime roots had spread to Khurda and Bhubaneswar. The injured criminal was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Roy added.
