Pakistan's Supreme Court overturned a Christian woman's conviction for blasphemy Wednesday and set aside the death sentence that was handed to her. Aasia Bibi was convicted under Pakistan's stringent anti-blasphemy law for allegedly making defamatory comments about Prophet Muhammad during a argument with Muslim women in 2009.

A trial court had convicted Aasia Bibi and sentenced her to death. The Lahore High Court had upheld that conviction and punishment. The Pakistani Supreme Court today set aside that conviction.

"The judgment of the high court and that of the trial court is reversed," the Supreme Court was quoted as saying by Dawn.com. The court directed that Aasia Bibi be immediately released from jail if she is not wanted in any other cases.

Earlier, security in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital and the city where the country's Supreme Court is located, was heightened in view of the verdict.

Aasia Bibi, 51, has been on the death row since November 2010.
