Tesla Roadster “Starman” Toy Launched By Hot Wheels

Re-issued Tesla Roadster toy warranty is “guaranteed for life”
Hot Wheels launched an updated version of their ’08 Tesla Roadster miniature toy. This newest version is based off Elon Musk’s personal Roadster that was launched into space earlier this year by SpaceX. Adhered to the Roadster’s dashboard was the original 1:64 Hot Wheels Tesla Roadster. Good cross promotion on the part of Tesla, SpaceX and Hot Wheels!
The newest version is available with updated packaging and paint color to match Elon’s Roadster. Sadly, there is no 1:64 “Starman” in the drivers seat. Nor is the model strapped to a 1:64 scale model of the falcon heavy. Most distressing, there is not a 1:4096 miniature of the 1:64 miniature Roadster on the dash.
The packaging also claims that Elon’s Roadster is the “1st car to orbit the sun!” This isn’t quite correct considering every single car on planet earth is orbiting the sun. But “first production car to exit earth and orbit the sun” does not have quite the same ring to it.
Overall this is a fun, affordable collectible. The back of the packaging has additional fun facts such as:
- Top Speed: 77,000 MPH
- Actual Miles Driven: Over 5 million miles and soaring!
- Booster Rocket: SpaceX Falcon Heavy

Simply cool 😎
“there is not a 1:128 miniature of the 1:64 miniature Roadster on the dash.”
Haha common mistake. To be in scale it should be 1/64 th of the 1:64 model. So a 1:4096 (1:64² ) model.
Regardless, without Starman it can really earn any ‘cool’ points.
Haha yes that sounds right, didn’t think about it too deeply since it was just a silly gag. 😉 Changed!
Ha ha, gave me a good laugh. Thought I’d nitpick on the math though. Wouldn’t a 1:64 model of a 1:64 model be 1:4096? Would certainly be cute! At 0.04″ in length though, only a flea would be able to experience the insane acceleration.
Even Ant-Man would complain about the legroom!
“First car to orbit the Sun.” Someone in the Hot Wheels marketing dept graduated from public high school with writing skill but they never understood 9th grade science. As a grade school kid I would have laughed out loud, while reading the box.
Every car ever made _is_ orbiting the sun.
They just have to add “on its own” or “by itself”.
First car on its own orbit of the sun.
First car to freely orbit the sun. ( as in not tied to lunar or earth orbit)
First car on heliocentric orbit (proper term).
First car in Hohmann Transfer orbit (opinion on whether this was achieved?)
I *want* Hot Wheels to use the right term. There’s no reason they can’t be even a slight bit educational. Or is that Matchbox?
Isn’t the earth on a heliocentric orbit? That would make every car on earth on the heliocentric orbit.
All of my statements were correct. Only one described what the Roadster/Starman are doing unique from other cars. I’d love Hot Wheels to write “First car in Hohmann Transfer Orbit!” and make every curious buyer go look up the term.
“First car in Hohmann Transfer orbit (opinion on whether this was achieved?)”
Hmmm… my understanding is that they aimed for a Hohmann transfer orbit to Mars orbit, but missed. So it’s not actually in such an orbit. But that’s getting very pedantic.. and more than slightly off-topic!
Marketing doesn’t need to be scientifically accurate; it just needs to sell the product. 😉
But they could have made it somewhat more accurate without resorting to being pedantic if the slogan would read “First car to escape Earth’s gravity!” (Altho those who know something about astrophysics will recognize that this is also an overstatement.)
“First Interplanetary Car”
“Sadly, there is no 1:64 ‘Starman’ in the drivers seat.”
I wonder how many days it will be until an aftermarket add-on for that appears on ebay or Etsy or some other internet auction/ crafting site?
Definitely needs Starman.
I did a still shot, and a video of Starman. To the sound of:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP6Ay54vruE
I’d buy it in a heartbeat if it had Starman.
Without Starman, I don’t care about it.
It’s really amazing how stunningly picturesque everything about the Falcon Heavy Launch went.
What no Astronaut behind the wheel, definitely still be a collectible and great P.R. For Tesla!
If I designed it, I would also do an extra limited edition car, limited and numbered for $99, that can play a few tunes of space music, like the music used at launch of Starman or 2001 A Space Odyssey. Yes, that means a battery, like a rechargeable watch battery. with a USB port on the bottom to recharge, I would also add a tiny AM/FM radio as well, because the songs get tiresome fast. If they marketed it to Tesla fans on a website, I predict it would sell out in a day!
Just as architects and building contractors in the past have gotten rid of troublesome bodies by doing something Concrete about the problem, I always thought that the ‘flying roadster’ was another great way, since exactly who is in the space suit?
