A Special Court of the CBI on Tuesday convicted former Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department C. Anandane and his son Ashok Anand, a sitting MLA of the AINRC, to one year’s rigorous imprisonment each in a disproportionate assets case.
The Special Judge for CBI cases P. Dhanabal also slapped a fine of ₹1 lakh on each of them.
According to the CBI sources, the Anti Corruption Branch of CBI, Chennai, registered a case against Mr. Anandane, his wife Vijayalakshmi and son Ashok Anand for accumulating assets to the tune of ₹3.75 crore during the period from January 1, 1997, to January 7, 2006, disproportionate to their known sources of income.
The CBI had registered a case under Section 13 (1) E of the Prevention of Corruption Act against Anandane and Section 13 (1) E read with Section 109 (punishment for abetment) of the Indian Penal Code against Ashok Anand.
After completion of investigation, the charge sheet was filed against the accused persons before Special Judge, Puducherry. The charges against Vijayalakshmi abated following her death during the course of the trial.
On completion of the trial, the court convicted them and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh each. The court also ordered the confiscation of property valued to the tune of disproportionate assets.
