A promising young footballer has handed himself into police after allegedly attempting to assault a woman in Melbourne's CBD on Sunday.

Jackson Williams, 19, appeared in court on Wednesday over the incident in which a 39-year-old woman was grabbed by an attacker on Little Lonsdale Street who then attempted to drag her into Brights Place at about 6.30am.

The woman was able to fight the man off and police released CCTV footage of the alleged suspect.

A 39-year-old woman was walking along Little Lonsdale Street in Melbourne's CBD on Sunday morning when the frightening attack occurred, police said

The suspect was last seen running towards Lonsdale Street. 

Paramedics assessed the woman at the scene, but she did not need to be treated at hospital. 

Williams, who is a Gladstone Park local, handed himself into police on Tuesday night.

He appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates court Wednesday, where it was revealed this is his first time in custody, according to the Herald Sun.

Williams was charged with intent to commit a sexual act, unlawful imprisonment, recklessly cause injury and other assault charges.

Williams has played in the Under 19 division in the Essendon District Football League.

He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to appear again on January 18.
