Cashier who stole Rs 5 lakh from textile outlet imprisoned
tnn | Nov 1, 2018, 00:43 ISTCoimbatore: A 30-year-old cashier of a popular textile outlet on Oppanakkara Street was arrested on Wednesday for stealing Rs 4.98 lakh from the shop.
The arrested was identified as Pandiyaraj, of Theni. According to police, he had been employed with the outlet for nearly one-and-a-half years. He was, however, promoted as cashier just a month ago.
Police said the incident took place on Sunday night when the outlet was closed after business hours. “Pandiyaraj, who was working on the fourth floor of the outlet, stole Rs 4.98 lakh and went into hiding,” a police officer said.
When the outlet management checked the previous week’s collections on Monday, they found Rs 4.98lakh was missing. They suspected Pandiyaraj to have made away with the cash, as he was also missing from the shop.
On Tuesday, shop’s manager Sivakumar lodged a complaint with the Bazaar police, who registered a case under Section 381 (amounting to theft of property belonging to a master by a clerk or servant) of the Indian Penal Code and launched a manhunt for Pandiayaraj.
Based on a tip that Pandiyaraj was staying at Perur, the Bazaar police nabbed him from his hideout on Wednesday. They also recovered the stolen money from him. Pandiyaraj was produced before a local court, which remanded him in judicial custody. He was subsequently lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
