Vadodara: City police commissioner, Anupam Singh Gahlaut inaugurated the cybercrime police station on Wednesday.
The new police station will function from Bhadra Kacheri premises in the Walled City. This will be city’s 24th police station.
Earlier, cybercrime cell existed but it functioned under the detection of crime branch (DCB). However, with the number of cybercrime cases increasing, the city police decided to have a separate police station for it.
The state government has already handed over equipment worth Rs 50 lakh for the cybercrime police station which will help the cops in detecting cyber frauds.
The police station will have total staff of 17 including one assistant commissioner of police (ACP), one police inspector, two police sub-inspectors and other cops. The staff strength will go up to 60 in the coming months.
“Having a separate police station and staff for cybercrime will help us in focusing on online frauds,” said Jaydeepsinh Jadeja, DCP (crime).
In 2015 too, city police department had sent a proposal to state government to have a dedicated police station for cybercrime, but the police was never approved.
