Chronicle Crime Reporter, Bhopal, Govindpura police nabbed two smugglers who came to sell Sand Boa snakes from Sehore in Bhopal, last night. Police also arrested 2 brokers and 2 buyers with them.
The accused were dealing in the security line area under Govindpura police station area. Police succeeded to arrest those on information of the informant. The accused are being questioned. The value of the recovered snake is being in lakhs of rupees in the international market.
According to TI of Govindpura police station Ashok Singh Parihar, at about one o’clock in between the night of Monday and Tuesday, police received information from the informant that half a dozen youths are suspiciously standing in the deserted area of Security line in Govindpura.
They have a basket in which a snake is also kept. After getting the information, ASI Mohan Verma rushed there with his team and seized all the accused by surrounding them. During the interrogation in police station, the accused have been identified as Jagdish Jatav and Omprakash Meena.
Both of them came to Bhopal to sell Sand boa snake. Other accused named Ravi Namdev, Sandeep Kurray, Harish Kurray and Arif Shah, who lives in Bhopal, had come to take the delivery of that snake.
Two of these are buyers and two are brokers. During the action, accused were inspecting the snake but police came there and had arrested them. Now Police is gathering information about their network with other smugglers.
Sand Boa worth crores in international market
The red sand boa snake has a huge demand in the international market, especially in China and Malaysia, where it is used for black magic and for medicinal purposes. There are some superstitions attached to the snake and it is believed to bring wealth. It is also used in making sex medicines.
This snake is sold in kilograms. “While in India, a 3-4 kg of red sand snake may cost around 25 lakh, internationally the cost can be in crores.
The red sand snake is endemic to Iran, Pakistan and India whereas in Madhya Pradesh it is mostly found in the jungles of Jabalpur, Bhedaghat and Panchmadi. The adult snake rarely exceeds two feet in total length (including tail). The Sand boa is endangered in India and its smugglers are jailed up to seven years.
It is a protected species under Schedule 2 of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, of India.
