Google reportedly working on ‘Play Pass’ subscription service for Android apps and games
Google is reportedly planning to bring ‘Play Pass’ subscription service for Android apps. The subscription service which is said to offer access to a number of paid apps for a monthly fee was first spotted by XDA Developers in June this year.
According to XDA Developers, the supposed ‘Play Pass’ feature was spotted by the developer Kieron Quinn who discovered code ‘containing reference’ to ‘Play Pass’ subscription in an APK teardown. XDA Developers found a new Google Opinion Rewards survey this month that further corroborated earlier discoveries about ‘Play Pass’ app subscription service.

As per the survey, it might likely offer ‘hundreds of dollars’ worth of paid apps and games for a monthly fee. However, the monthly rate has not been specified.
XDA Developers shared a screenshot of Google Opinion Rewards that reads, “Imagine your app store has a subscription that offers hundreds of dollars worth of paid apps and games for a monthly fee. How well does “Pass” describe this service?”
9to5Google notes that the ‘Play Pass’ subscription service might ‘entail’ users to pay a monthly fee so that they can get access to a ‘selection’ of premium games instead of purchasing it individually.
While the code references and the supposed Google Opinion Rewards give hints that the Google ‘Play Pass’ subscription service is in development it remains to be seen as when the company’s plans to bring the feature for its users. Reports suggest that the ‘Play Pass’ feature might be somewhat similar to Apple’s ‘App Bundles’ that allow users to buy nearly 10 apps in a single purchase. Besides iOS, the app is available on Mac as well.
