The meticulous analysis of data on income tax collections has a shocking conclusion — despite implementation of countless rules and regulations, the onus of filling the revenue treasury falls largely on the salaried class and those who are squarely covered within the tax deduction at source ambit (OpEd page, “Who pays taxes and who doesn’t”, October 30). For most assessees, tax is deducted from their income even before they receive it, so there is absolutely no scope for tax evasion. It is distressing that loopholes in the tax law are exploited. Where is the equity?
